Birds is the musical project of East London based DJ, Katie Wilkinson. The music is an outcome of new wave 80s goth, techno, psychedelic and world music influences. The name was inspired by the numerous birds she encountered during long, reflective runs through Hackney's marshes.

‘Self Control’ is her first EP under the ‘Birds’ alias and aims to bring about elements of freedom and loss of inhibitions. The lyrics are a tongue in cheek guide to surrendering yourself to the night. Having been in guitar bands for years and always singing about the horrific state of the world or personal problems in her own life, she wanted to do something a bit different. She wanted to create something that can help to break the cycle of worrying about the way that the world is going; some light and playful relief during rather dark times. Something that people can dance to, as dancing is one of the most healing things a person can do.

As a DJ, as well as through her music she exercises a never ending desire to explore sonic possibility. Her sets reflect these curiosities and have an extremely transcendent nature to them; you never know whether you'll find yourself dancing to churning low tempo industrial techno, middle eastern hidden gems, high tempo acidic bass lines or something far and between these things. She has a monthly radio show on Netil Radio (the fourth Tuesday of the month 5pm-7pm).
